Ce documentaire est filmé dans l'estuaire du Tage, situé face à la zone orientale de Lisbonne et surnommée “Mar da Palha” (Mer de Paille). Ce site classé Réserve Naturelle, au nord d’Alcochete, est la zone humide la plus dense du pays et l’une des dix plus importantes d’Europe. Ce statut lui a été conféré pour la protection des oiseaux aquatiques migrateurs qui accourent ici. Aux périodes migratoires, l’Estuaire peut recueillir près de 120.000 oiseaux parmi eux les «Alfaiates» (avocette) qui forment une véritable concentration, puisque l’on peut trouver ici plus de 20% de la population d’Europe occidentale.
Mais se sont les bandes de flamants au plumage rose qui offrent un paysage véritablement éblouissant. Cela paraît presque impossible que ces mêmes oiseaux se concentrent l’été dans les marécages d’Alcochete, aussi près de Lisbonne, dans une image qui nous transporte vers des horizons lointains, bien plus au sud.
Le Tage "Tejo" prend sa source en Espagne, dans la Serra d’Albarracin, et se jette dans l'atlantique près de Lisbonne, il parcourt près de 1.100 kms, c'est le plus grand fleuve traversant le Portugal.
